How Filmistani collects, uses, and protects your data.

1. Who we are

Filmistani ("we", "our", "us") is an AI-powered movie and web-series discovery platform hosted at www.filmistani.com. We help users find great cinema faster through curated rails, live IMDb ratings, an AI Concierge ("Filmi"), and a Creator Community section.

2. What data we collect

We collect the minimum data needed to operate the service:

  • Account data (only if you sign in): your Google account name, email address, and profile picture URL — received via Google OAuth 2.0. We never receive your Google password.
  • Usage data: pages visited, titles clicked, watchlist additions, AI Concierge messages, and search queries. Used to personalize your home feed.
  • Anonymous browser ID: a random ID stored in your browser's localStorage so we can offer personalization even before sign-in. Cannot be reversed to identify you.
  • Device & connection info: IP address (for rate limiting only — not stored long-term), browser type, and approximate region (country/state).

3. How we use your data

  • Operate and improve the recommendation engine
  • Save your watchlist and preferences across devices
  • Notify you about upcoming releases you've subscribed to
  • Detect and block abuse, spam, or unauthorized API access
  • Aggregate, anonymized analytics on which titles are popular

We do not sell your data. We do notshow third-party advertising. We do not share your identifiable data with anyone, except as required by law.

4. Third-party services

Filmistani uses these third-party services to function. Each has its own privacy policy:

  • Google OAuth 2.0 — for sign-in. Google's privacy policy.
  • TMDB (The Movie Database) — for movie/series metadata, posters, and recommendations. Filmistani uses TMDB but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB. TMDB privacy.
  • YouTube Data API v3 — for the Creator Community section. We only READ public channel metadata; we never upload, comment, or interact on your behalf. By using the YouTube features of Filmistani, you also agree to the YouTube Terms of Service and acknowledge Google's privacy policy.
  • Google Gemini API (via Emergent LLM key) — powers the AI Concierge ("Filmi"). Your chat messages are sent to Gemini for response generation. We don't train models on your data.
  • Razorpay — when you support us via donation, payment is processed by Razorpay. We never see your card details.
  • JustWatch (public GraphQL) — for streaming-provider deep-link resolution. No personal data is shared.

5. Cookies & local storage

We use cookies and browser storage strictly for functionality:

  • session_token — keeps you signed in (httpOnly, 7-day expiry)
  • fm_anon — anonymous browser ID for personalization
  • fm.pwa.dismiss, fm.pwa.installed — to suppress install banner
  • fm_bootstrap_done — remembers if you've set genre preferences

We do not use advertising or tracking cookies.

6. Data retention

  • Account data: kept until you delete your account
  • Clicks & watchlist: kept while your account is active
  • AI Concierge logs: 30 days, then deleted
  • Server logs (IP, request paths): 14 days max

7. Your rights

You have the right to:

  • Access — request a copy of your data
  • Delete — request full account & data deletion
  • Correct — fix any inaccurate data
  • Opt out — disable personalization in Profile

8. Children's privacy

Filmistani is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children. The "Family-Safe Mode" toggle filters adult content out of all rails but does not change our data-collection policy.

9. Changes to this policy

When we update this policy, we'll update the "Last updated" date at the top. Material changes will be announced on the home page for 14 days.
